PUCP ranks first nationwide in 10 majors of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019
Our university has a significant leap compared to the previous edition of this prestigious list: it went from leading 6 to 10 academic subjects in the country.
This is the first time that PUCP reaches this position nationwide in ten majors of this ranking developed by the British Company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). “It is a recognition to PUCP’s community work and effort. Thus, we can say that we are doing things well. Specifically in these subjects, the quality of research has been really appreciated and valued by the international academic community” said Janina Leon, director of the Academic Planning and Evaluation Directorate (DAPE).
The majors (or subjects) QS in which we are positioned are the following:
• Computer Science and IT systems
• Economics & Econometrics
• Physics & Astronomy
• Modern languages
• Business and Management
• Politics & International Studies
Out of all these subjects, PUCP maintains nationwide leadership in five areas (Law, Economics & Econometrics, Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Business & Management). This year five other areas have been included: Archeology, Computer Science, Physics & Astronomy, Politics & International Studies, and Sociology.
As stated by DAPE team, this ranking qualifies the performance of universities in 48 subjects, for which it uses four indicators: two of reputation and two of research. The first two are about reputation, based on academic and staff answers, which recognize PUCP as a world reference university in the corresponding subjects.
Regarding the research indicators, one of them is the h index (built according to the number of papers and the number of times these papers are cited). The other research indicator is the one of citations per publication. Each area of specialization has different values in each of these four indicators; for example, arts are more valued in reputation than in research; the opposite happens in engineering or life sciences.
Within all the QS rankings, this is one of the most challenging since it requires the university to reach the world’s top universities level in different QS subjects. It has been a considerable achievement because the results have placed PUCP as a national leader in ten subjects this year. These results encourage us to keep working on strengthening PUCP as an internationally renowned university.
